Broward Housing Solutions® (BHS®) welcomes new Youth Solutions resident

Broward Housing Solutions® (BHS®) welcomes new Youth Solutions resident, ‘Eric H.’ into their affordable housing program designed to house young adults who aged out of the foster care system.

Precariously housed and in foster care, ‘Eric H.’ was referred to BHS®’ Youth Solutions housing program by collaborative partners, Childnet and Henderson Behavioral Health.  “This is the best birthday present I’ve ever received” stated Eric who also turned 19 years old just 10-days earlier. A challenging childhood coupled with periods of homelessness landed ‘Eric H.’ in foster care – that’s when BHS® stepped in.

BHS®’ Youth Solutions® housing program addresses the immediate need for long-term stability by arming these young residents with the tools such as life skills and case management support that promote independent living after transitioning out at age 23. BHS® addresses the serious social issue: Reducing substantial financial strains on our communities such as incarceration and substance abuse.

For many young people who age out of foster care, the transition to adulthood and economic self-sufficiency can be abrupt. At age 18 – 21, these young adults are forced to secure suitable housing and, in most cases, do so with little or no support from family or the state. As a result, many find themselves homeless or precariously housed. BHS® tackles this issue up front being proactive in securing and maintaining a stable home with supportive services for independent living.
